About Us


The Friends of the Ballard (Hiram M. Chittenden) Locks is a group of individuals who volunteer with the The Seattle District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to preserve historical materials related to the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and Carl S. English, Jr. Botanical Garden. The Friends of the Ballard Locks (FOBL) hold a monthly meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30pm at the Ballard Locks.  All are welcome.  If you are interested in volunteering with us, email susanatthelocks@gmail.com for more information.

Mission Statement
The Friends of the Ballard Locks endeavors to identify, preserve, and make available records and papers, images, film and artifacts of enduring historical value concerning the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, Carl S. English, Jr. Botanical Garden, and the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The Friends perform this mission as individual volunteers for the Seattle District of the US Army Corps of Engineers with the common bonds of a desire to document the history of these sites and serve the local community.
